LTG Cushman enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940 and in 1944 graduated form the United States Military Academy. He served with the 808th Engineer Aviation Battalion in the Philippines and Japan and in 1946 joined the 38th Special Engineer Battalion at Sandia Base, New Mexico. In 1951 he transferred to the Infantry branch, joined 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in Germany from 1951-1954. Between 1955 - 1962 he served in multiple staff positions. In 1963 he became the Senior Advisor to the 21st Division of the Vietnamese Army in Vietnam Delta. In 1965 he reported to the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, KY where he was Director of Supply, Chief of Staff and Commander of 2d Brigade. In 1967, he led his brigade to Vietnam where they fought in the TET 1968 battles around Hue. The 2d Brigade there earned the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He then commanded Fort Devens, Massachusetts, returning to Vietnams Delta in 1970 as the Deputy Senior Advisor & Senior Advisor to the Commanding General, IV Corps and Military Region 4. In 1972-1973, General Cushman commanded the 101st Airborne Division, its colors just returned form Vietnam to Fort Campbell, KY. 1973-1976 he commanded the Army Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth. From 1976 - 1978, General Cushman commanded I Corps (ROK/US) Group. General Cushman retired in 1978. October 3, 1921 to November 8, 2017
