U.S. ARMY VIETNAM ERA RANKS TO PRESENT

In 1958 the restructuring of title changed and was announced dated 28 September 1959, described the insignia as follows:

*Private First Class
Corporal Specialist 4th Class
Sergeant *Specialist 5th Class
Staff Sergeant *Specialist 6th Class
Sergeant First Class *Specialist 7th Class
Master Sergeant 1st Sergeant *Specialist 8th Class
Sergeant Major *Specialist 9th Class
*Private E2-1968
*Private First Class-1968
*Command Sergeant Major-1968
*Sergeant Major of the Army-1979
*Sergeant Major of the Army-1994

*In 1965, Specialist Eight and Specialist Nine grades was discontinued.

*In 1968, the insignia of the single cheveron, which was previously the Private First Class was authrorized for Private E2. A new insignia for Private First Class was now authorized.

*In 1968, a new insignia authorized for Sergeants Majors assigned at the principle of NCO of Battalion or higher. The insignia was the same as the Sergeant Major insignia except the star was small and a wreath was placed around the star.

*In 1978, Specialist Seven was discontinued.

*In 1979, the insignia for Sergeant Major of the Army was now authorized.

*In 1985, Specialist Five and Specialist Six was discontinued.

*In 1994, Sergeant Major of the Army insignia changed to add teh Coat of Arms of the United States between the two stars in the center of the insignia.
